The Inaugural Geoff Mealing Trophy competition was held on Sunday February 1st.
A thoroughly enjoyable day and a fitting celebration of Geoff’s life and contribution to our Club as a player, coach and head coach.
Geoff’s son Geoff, pictured here, kindly donated the Trophy and prize money in the memory of his late father.
The day’s format was simple. Eight teams of three players. Eight ends per match. quarter finals, semi finals and a final. With the bonus of an “unusual” spider competition thrown in.
The Teams
The progression of the teams through the tournament can be followed on the ladder below.
The final started as a close affair with a score of four shots each after two ends. A series of ones and twos left the score six all after five ends. The breakthrough came in the seventh end with a five. Although one shot was pulled back on the final end the score finished twelve shots to seven.
Commiserations to the runners up Cliff Goddard (lead), Terry Clark (second) and Stephen Addison (skip).
Pictured below are the winning team. Noel Shinnick (lead), Tricia O’Brien (second) and Chris Cane (skip) along with the winning scorecard.
Spider Competition – Players from all eight teams plus some spectators took part in this “one shot” competition. Jacks were positioned in two corners of the whole rink with players bowling from the opposite diagonal (a length of over 40 metres). The winner was Chris Howard with a remarkable shot within five feet. For his efforts he won a bottle of Jack Daniels, kindly donated by Sue and Mike Hillsden.
In conclusion, it was special day for the Club. A celebration of the life of one of our members, sadly missed. Thanks must go to all involved in organising such a successful day. We all look forward to the same event next year.
